Hello All,

We hope you and your families are doing well after the storm. It was, and for many continues to be challenging. New York has always stood ta ll and proud. We will overcome the challenges and come back an even stronger city.

As you know the storm caused us to temporarily postpone and reschedule the theatre performances for ’8 Million Protagonists’. We have now finalized the schedule for opening nite (November 8th) and the remainder of the performances. It is certain to be a fun, entertaining show. In fact the storyline is about the unique people and frequent unexpected experiences of authentic New Yorkers.

Week 1

Thursday Nov. 8th 8pm Opening Night (All ticket holders from the originally scheduled opening nite Thursday, Nov 1st will be accepted.) Otherwise sold-out.
Friday, Nov. 9th 8PM Original tickets will be honored or you can choose new show date. Seats are still available
Saturday, Nov. 10th 2pm Original tickets will be honored or you can choose a new show date. Seats are still available

PLEASE READ REGARDING RESCHEDULING

Any ticket holders for November 1st, Nov. 2nd or Nov. 3rd (both shows) will have the option of choosing a new show time to attend with the exception of Nov. 8th. Unfortunately Nov. 8th is the rescheduled date for opening nite and is SOLD OUT. We truly apologize. Please let us know as soon as possible which show you would like to attend. We will do everything we can to accommodate your request.

As a show of our support for NYC, the Tri-state area, and the great people of New York we will be donating a portion of all ticket sales to the Hurricane Sandy recovery effort.

’8 Million Protagonists’ is a new Off-Broadway play with real stories of everyday New York life at its core – As a first of its kind crowdsourced theatre play, the plot is comprised of real stories and experiences written by New Yorkers at newyorkwritesitself.com.

From the funny, romantic, emotional, bizarre or just plain crazy, these submitted stories capture the uncensored streets of New York, and for the first time are being brought to life in theatre – all performed through a variety of wonderful and varied characters.

NewYorkWritesItself.com is a destination for New Yorkers to write down the funny, weird, romantic, bizarre or just plain crazy things they experience everyday on the streets of New York. These stories form a constantly growing script of real stories. Last winter, we curated NEW YORK TYPES, a letterpress exhibition that showcased the real words, sentences, and conversations of New Yorkers in unique letterpress styles designed by some of city’s best type artists. The show had a record attendance at the Art Directors Club in New York.

Earlier this summer we also premiered THE CHAIRMAN, a monthly web series featuring veteran New York actor Kevin Conway. Every month The Chairman selected his favorite Script entries and retold them from his iconic yellow chair from across the five boroughs. Bushwick is throwing down next Saturday 7/28 (we actually hear Bushwick throws down every Saturday, but still!). The annual summer Bushwick Block Party is taking over Roberta’s (at 261 Moore Street), and will feature music from headliner Andrew W.K., Your Youth, Iyez, Naam, Soft Spot, Gang Signs, Wild Yaks, MC Todd Experience (we’re nodding like we’ve heard of all of these guys) and lots of food including free pizza from 12-2.

The Chairman Episode 2 - “Automated Voice”

A crowded train from Brooklyn stops in the tunnel and we hear the automated subway voice — “Ladies and gentlemen we are being held momentarily by traffic ahead”. As momentarily turns into a few moments, we hear it again “Ladies and gentlemen”… After a few minutes there is the inevitable realization that we’re no longer on the train, but are 100 people standing inside a metal tube deep underground. As the automated voice speaks once again, we would rather hear it say — “Ladies and gentlemen, we understand this is fucked. We’ll be on our way when the motherfucking train ahead moves it ass”.

NEW YORK WRITES ITSELF WINS 1 GOLD + 2 BRONZE LIONS AT CANNES

We have great news! At last week’s 59th Cannes Lions Festival, New York Writes Itself took home a Gold Lion for Branded Entertainment (for Best use or integration of user-generated content) it the award’s inaugural year. Additionally, we picked up 2 Bronze Lions — a Direct Lion (for Use of Direct Marketing) and a PR Lion (for Best Use of Social Media).

New York Writes Itself owes these successes to you — the real people of New York, who have been adding to the Script and helping us to turn the everyday but extraordinary sights and sounds from the streets of NY into exciting creative productions.

Our first execution of the project was “New York Types,” a letterpress art exhibition last winter, in which the city’s leading letterpress artists brought real words heard on the streets of New York (as added to the Script) to life letter by letter. Our most recent Script-inspired productions include “The Chairman,” a new bi-weekly web comedy series featuring Kevin Conway, and an Off-Broadway play currently in production to premiere in August.

We’ve all been seduced by the ambiance of an independent bookstore – it’s the smell of coffee and fresh pages, the quiet background buzz and hunky late-20s bookseller, the low ceilings and reading nooks – into buying a book we know we won’t ever read. Eterna Cadencia, an independent publisher in Argentina, isn’t letting us get away with this in “The Book That Can’t Wait.” The anthology of new Latin authors is printed with special ink that will fade within two months of being exposed to sunlight and air in the hopes of getting new authors necessary immediate exposure.

Cigarettes, the morning paper, an onion bagel, dewy tree leaves, sterile air-conditioned air, a fellow commuter’s hairspray, bus exhaust, sweaty dog, urine - these are all smells you probably experienced on your way to work this morning! Inspired by the smells of the city and funded by a Kickstarter campaign launched last summer comes “New York, Phew York,” a new scratch-n-sniff book that features 30 smells - among them sewer steam, pizza, and Central Park horses. “I think it’s just an amazing way to experience the city,” author Amber C. Jones told CBS. “I think it’s just a way that’s so understated. You know, everyone’s like ‘Oh, I saw this’ and ‘I went here’ but instead of like ‘I smelt this.’” Find out more information on “New York, Phew York” here. [via NY Mag]
